What IS Autism???
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a group of developmental disabilities
that effect a person's ability to understand what he/she hears, see, thinks, or
otherwise sense.......

What We DO...
Wilkes Autism Society is an open door organization that helps families and
communities of Wilkes cope, understand, and deal with the effects of Autism.
We are educators, therapists, social care givers, and parents of or children with
Autism. We provide education, comfort, contacts, resources, and shoulders to
lean on for those that are effected or want to learn more about Autism.

Parents' Point of View...
Parents of Autistic children are very strong, understanding, and OVERLOOKED!
Children with Autism are sometimes very high maintenance and can cause
everyones' world around them to collapse. At first a parent of an autistic child
will probably react in one of two ways....when a parent realizes that something
about their child is unusual they alot of times say "he/she is just a baby they will
grow out of this stage" but when a significant amount of time has passed and
the unusual behavior had stayed then the parent usually becomes frightened
for their child and sometimes goes into denial. If you suspect your child has odd
development....please tell someone you need help.... Your doctor, friend, family,
local school principal, Wilkes Autism Rep., or go online and search for help.
Early Intervention is VERY important for the children AS WELL AS THE
PARENT!
Parents with autistic children sacrifice in many forms.....Parents usually become
very emotionally distressed, lose contact with their friends and relatives, find
themselves in VERY heavy financial burden, and a VERY heavy task of coping
and trying to help and teach their autistic children. Parents will often seclude
themselves and their children because of the lack of acceptance in the
community. For example, a parent with an autistic child goes to a
resturant....Their child may have a odd trait such as constant humming or
tapping an object on the table, the public generally views this behavior as
unacceptable or misbehaving. The public will ask the parent "is he/she spoiled"
or "can't you make your child behave?" when the fact is the child is not
misbehaving at all.....this is called
stemming and the child nor the parent have
any control over the effects! Thus the parents will seclude themselves and their
children to reduce the amount of stress and pain in their lives.

Donate...
We are in need of members, volunteers, and cash donations. If you would like
to give in any form we would be delighted. We are non profit....meaning NO
ONE in this organization collects a paycheck from their services to the
organization or the public! All donations in the form of money or material objects
relevant to childcare or Autism  are tax deductible and go to education,
research, and providing help for those in Wilkes County who are struggling with
Autism.
